Elements and Performance Criteria

  1. Prepare to check RAPS system use
  2. Risk control measures are applied in accordance with workplace procedures prior to commencing work
  3. Risks/hazards are identified, assessed, reported to relevant person/s and control measures implemented
  4. Nature and location of RAPS system is identified from relevant documentation or from relevant person/s to determine the scope of work
  5. Instructions for coordinating work with relevant personnel and the local community are obtained from relevant person/s and applied
  6. Materials required for the work are identified and accessed in accordance with workplace procedures
  7. Tools, equipment and testing devices required for work are obtained and checked for correct operation and safety
  8. Check use of RAPS system
  9. Need to test or measure live electrical work is determined in accordance with WHS/OHS requirements and conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
  10. Circuits/machines/plant are isolated in accordance with WHS/OHS requirements and workplace procedures
  11. RAPS system testing and checks are conducted in accordance with relevant workplace procedures
  12. Retrieval of performance data is completed safely and in accordance with workplace procedures
  13. Known types of functional faults are identified using fault-finding procedures
  14. Non-routine events are referred to relevant person/s for directions in accordance with workplace procedures
  15. Checking is conducted minimising waste of materials, energy, damage to apparatus, circuits, the surrounding environment and services
  16. Quality checks are conducted in accordance with workplace procedures
  17. Complete check of RAPS system and report outcomes
  18. Worksite is cleaned and made safe in accordance with workplace procedures
  19. Issues identified during checking are referred to the local community in accordance with workplace procedures
  20. Check results are reported to relevant person/s in accordance with check reporting and workplace procedures

Performance Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions on at least one occasion and include:

retrieving of performance data

identifying demand use issues

reporting all check activities

applying relevant work health and safety (WHS)/occupational health and safety (OHS) requirements and workplace procedures and practices, including the use of risk control measures

checking isolation of circuits/machines/systems

completing remote area power supply (RAPS) use reporting

conducting checks of use of RAPS

coordinating work with relevant personnel and the local community

dealing with unplanned events/situations in accordance with workplace procedures in a manner that minimises risk to personnel and equipment

determining live electrical work testing/measurement requirements

identifying and accessing materials, tools, equipment and testing devices.


Knowledge Evidence

Evidence required to demonstrate competence in this unit must be relevant to and satisfy all of the requirements of the elements, performance criteria and range of conditions and include knowledge of:

RAPS system use auditing techniques, including:

general safety

demand side use of power systems encompassing:

demand exceeds supply

size or capacity of the system

energy needs of the end users

energy use awareness of the end users

data logging chips

demand versus supply encompassing:

selecting appliances

using appliances

using lights, hot water and freezers

energy efficient items

compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) globes

water saver shower heads

weather stripping

appropriate use of RAPS system components - overloading system components, using generator supply for heavy loads

reporting

relevant manufacturer specifications

relevant job safety assessments or risk mitigation processes

relevant WHS/OHS legislated requirements

relevant workplace policies and procedures.
